Hydrogen Water Purity
Hydrogen water purity is specified in two parts: treated feed-water quality entering the cell, and the composition of the hydrogen dissolved into the water. PEM/SPE construction contains no liquid caustic electrolyte, so caustic carry-over is not a contaminant path.
- Feed water is filtered and deionised to a stated conductivity before electrolysis.
- PEM/SPE cells have no potassium hydroxide inventory, removing alkaline carry-over by construction.
- Residual moisture and wetted-material species are the remaining considerations.
Feed-water treatment
Particulate filtration protects the membrane surface and ion-exchange resin lowers conductivity to the cell's specified feed range. Untreated water carries hardness and dissolved solids that deposit on cell surfaces and alter stack behaviour.
Contaminant paths by cell type
Alkaline systems circulate a potassium hydroxide solution, so aerosol carry-over is a recognised path requiring management. PEM/SPE cells carry no liquid electrolyte, so specifications concentrate on residual moisture and on the materials in contact with the water and gas.
- Caustic aerosol: present in alkaline systems, absent in PEM/SPE.
- Residual moisture: the dominant PEM/SPE consideration.
- Feed-water solids: controlled by filtration and deionising resin.
