Hydrogen Water Production

Hydrogen water production generates hydrogen from deionised water in a PEM/SPE cell and dissolves it into the water volume. Output is characterised by achievable dissolved concentration, cycle time, feed-water specification and consumable service interval.

Process stages

Production has four functional stages: feed-water treatment, electrolysis, gas–liquid contact for dissolution, and separation of the co-produced oxygen stream. Bottle formats compress these into one vessel; bench and plumbed systems separate them and are easier to characterise.

  • Treatment: filtration and deionisation to the cell feed specification.
  • Electrolysis: PEM/SPE stack splits water into hydrogen and oxygen.
  • Dissolution: contact time and pressure govern how much hydrogen enters solution.
  • Separation: oxygen is separated at the membrane rather than dissolved.

Output characterisation

Output is stated as dissolved hydrogen concentration at a defined measurement point and a defined time after production, together with electrical input, feed-water requirement and service interval. Concentration quoted without measurement timing cannot be compared between systems.
