Engine Performance and Hydrogen Enrichment
Performance effects come from changing how the charge burns, not from adding meaningful energy. The measurable levers are flame speed, burn duration and completeness of combustion.
Combustion mechanics
Hydrogen's laminar flame speed is roughly an order of magnitude above diesel's. A small hydrogen fraction shortens ignition delay and combustion duration, moving more of the heat release closer to top dead center where it does useful work.
Where operators notice it
- Load response and pull under sustained grade
- Reduced visible smoke under acceleration
- Smoother running at part load on well-maintained engines
Measuring it honestly
Torque and power claims require a dynamometer, not seat-of-the-pants assessment. Combustion-efficiency effects are best evidenced by fuel consumption at matched load and by opacity measurements. Results vary by engine, duty cycle, fuel quality, maintenance state and baseline. Any figure quoted here is an upper bound observed under favorable conditions, not a guarantee for a specific vehicle.
