Oxyhydrogen Combustion Enhancement

Oxyhydrogen is hydrogen and oxygen in the 2:1 ratio produced by splitting water. Used as a combustion enhancer, it is added in quantities far too small to fuel the engine — its function is to change how the primary fuel burns, not to replace any part of it.

Technical explanation

Enrichment fractions in this application are typically well under one percent of the intake charge by volume. At that level the energy contribution of the hydrogen is trivial; what matters is its chemistry. Hydrogen's minimum ignition energy is roughly an order of magnitude below that of hydrocarbon fuels, and its flame speed is several times higher.

The oxygen delivered with it is equally relevant. Arriving with its own oxidiser, the hydrogen fraction produces highly reactive radical species — H, OH and O — early in the cycle. Those radicals accelerate the chain-branching reactions that govern hydrocarbon oxidation, which is the sense in which oxyhydrogen behaves as a catalyst rather than a fuel.

Combustion effects

The measurable consequences are a shorter ignition delay, faster early flame growth, a shorter total burn duration and a higher fraction of fuel oxidised before the exhaust valve opens. That maps directly onto lower unburned hydrocarbons, lower carbon monoxide and reduced smoke.

It does not defeat thermodynamics. Efficiency gains are bounded by how much of the fuel was burning late or incompletely in the first place — a well-tuned engine at its best operating point has less to recover than a heavily loaded engine at part load. Net benefit must also be reduced by the electrical power the generator draws.

Application-specific notes

  • Largest headroom: older or heavily loaded diesels with visible smoke
  • Smallest headroom: modern, well-maintained engines at optimal load
  • Enrichment beyond the design flow does not scale the benefit linearly
  • Always net off alternator load when calculating efficiency change
